Elvis Presley Hairstyle

The King of Rock and Roll, even today, he holds the throne. There has yet to be another American icon as instantly recognizable as Elvis Presley (well, unless you want to count Mickey Mouse). So iconic that, while you may not be able to recognize a single musician or band your kids are into, they sure as heck know who the King of Rock and Roll is, and the Elvis Presley Hairstyle is part of that image.

Presley didn't actually invent that hairstyle, you know. Presley is often called the first Rock and Roll Superhero, and he really did cast a larger than life image, like Superman or Batman or... Shazam!, Captain Marvel, the comic book hero from whom Presley borrowed the style. Presley's love of music ran neck and neck with his love of comic books, so by borrowing the sounds of his favorite blues musicians and the look of his favorite heroes, he established the image of The King.

Some people mistake Presley's hair for a "pompadour". A pompadour is fine if you're doing a stage production of Grease, but it's all wrong for Presley. Presley's hair is known as a "duck's butt" for its similarities in appearance to the butt of a duck. Now the style you want depends on the era of Elvis you're going for. We'll break down both of them for you below.

The younger look, the fifties look, the pre-G. I. Elvis is a little easier to achieve. Start with some pomade and get it in your hair nice and thick. You can use gel or spray or mousse if you like, but it lacks authenticity, so we'll discuss pomade here. Once it's in there, comb it through thoroughly to get it evenly distributed. Now use your hands to slick back the back and sides, and then use a comb to tighten the top. Now tease it so that it has a little volume and you get just enough locks hanging over your forehead, using a photo of the King in his prime for reference.

The Viva Las Vegas Presley requires a little length, say, chin-length or so. It looks a little long, but the idea is to comb it up so you have some volume. Follow the directions above, but make it BIGGER. Presley's later days were all about doing everything big, so don't be afraid of getting a little more volume than you're used to. Let it poof out a bit, let it breath, and see how big you can grow out your sideburns.
